Building a ATV rack case?

I have been thinking about the possibility of building my own case for the back rack on my ATV. I was thinking about it last night, if I drew up something that would work as a superstructure, then I can have my brother weld it together from lightweight metal tubing and I just build a canvas slip cover to go over it. I could even add in mesh sides on it and a mesh top with a hasp on it so I can lock it closed if I want to have it be a secure storage place for whatever I want stored in it. Definitely something that I am going to be pondering on.

Check out this article on Whoops

I found a article on riding the whoops at ATV Magazine.

The article talks about the proper way to approach whoops (you know them things, right? The ripples in the track that send you jostling this way and that as your ATV bounces over them) and how to get used to them before you take them at speed.

I love whoops, they're one of the best parts of the trail for me. Kind of like being on a bouncy roller coaster or, sometimes, on a feisty bronc. My poor ATV is not yet old enough or broken in enough to tackle them properly, but I've hit them on my brother's ATV. This article shows anyone that is not familiar with them, or maybe just has not quite got the hang of taking them, how to cruise over whoops like a pro.

Trekking & Searching for new ATV Trails

by: Mitch Johnson
(Article reprinted with permission)

Throughout North America and many other parts of the world ATVs and dirt bike off road trail parks and facilities continue to grow. As the sport of ATV racing (i.e http://www.atv-parts-n-accessories.com/polaris_atv_ratings.htm) and recreational off road riding becomes more popular, the success of established trails encourages additional riding areas to be developed.

The growing number of enthusiastic ATV riders is not the only cause for a demand of more trails. All ATV riders, new and old, want more trails for the challenge. ATVers demand new trails because they strive to conquer anything they can.

Riding off road with ATVs has become a sport many dedicate themselves to, but there are just as many people who enjoy the sport on a sporadic basis.

Renting ATVs and riding the trails is not an uncommon tourist attraction in many areas of the United States. Because of this many people have experienced and enjoyed ATV riding at some of the trail parks around the nation. Some now dedicated ATV riders started out by taking a recreational off road drive at one of these tourist trail parks.

Perhaps some of the most extravagant ATV and dirt bike trails established are those in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia. The Hatfield-McCoy Trails stretch for over 500 miles and growing. They have come to be known as “Trails Heaven.”

These ATV trails attract all types of rider and accommodations for the different crowds are abundant. In the areas surrounding “Trails Heaven” there are hotels, bed and breakfast inns, ATV rentals shops, ATV and dirt bike mechanical shops, guided tours and other activities to fill a weekend vacation. This area is the place to be for any of the ATV racing, riding and special events you are interested in. Bringing your own off road vehicle is allowed at “Trails Heaven,” but a permit is required for all riders, rental or other.

The Hatfield-McCoy Trails are also the host of several high scale ATV and dirt bike riding events throughout the year. These are the events where you can meet hundreds of fellow ATV enthusiasts. In 2005 there will be an ATV/dirt bike jamboree for riders to participate in. The Appalachian trails also coordinate a Dirt Days riding event. They will also be the host for the National ATV and dirt bike rally week in ’05. Places like “Trails Heaven” are a great riding spot for ATVers of any skill level because they have the proper accommodations for all. There are many other similar ATV trails established, however, if you are a regular rider, you probably want to find your own, local trails and make the big trail parks a weekend event.

Whether you are new to the sport or just looking for some new trails to experience, there are several web sites that help you locate the right place. At trailsource.com you can choose a region anywhere in the world to search for a specific ATV riding area. ATVTrails.org does the same, but for United States trails only. With these search tools you can find a local riding spot, or plan to visit the large, high traffic trails for a weekend, such as at the Hatfield-McCoy Trails.

Okay, last one. I really do promise this time

These guys have a really good winter video of ATVs on the trail so I just wanted to share it too before I bail. I'm bailing now, I promise.

(Hey, come on, what do you expect to be getting from a gal that wants to be out there riding her own ATV when she finds ATV vids on YouTube? O:-))

This is kind of what I want to do

Okay, here we go. I found a video that shows sort of what it is that I want to be doing with my quad and a camera this summer. Although I think, if possible, I'd like to show a little less road from quad POV and a little more scenery than these guys have in their video.

I'll get off You Tube now, I promise. ::innocent look::

You have to see this video!

Okay, this is the one I was looking for. Check this shit out, it's wicked! I want to know this guy's name. I caught the video on the Discovery Channel the other night, but was just passing through the room at the time and didn't catch who this was.

(This was the best quality version of this I was able to find on You Tube in the few minutes I looked at several of them there, please let me know if anyone knows a better version or who this was. Thanks!)

Quad Tricks

So, umm... is this what the city kids do when the rest of us are out mud bogging and going cross country on our ATVs?

Warning: slooooowwwww... very very slooowww.. if you are a speed junkie this is not for you (I almost fell asleep and I'm not a speed junkie), but it's decent multi-person wheelies and such on quads.

I was looking for ATV tricks (as in stuff like the guy that did a backroll over a train on TV the other day) when I found this - the apparent city kids vs mud bogging got to me so I had to post it.

Looking for other ATVers

Just a heads up, if there are any locals in Alaska reading this, I'm looking for other ATV riders in the MatSu that might be interested in exploring the countryside this summer. I'm not looking for anything like wild jumps and stunts type stuff and don't plan on doing any bogging until my ATV is broke in better, but would not mind joining some local ATVers in cruising the trails or whatever.

If you're in the MatSu and interested drop a comment in here.

The Driver's POV

I'm not sure why this video was flagged on YouTube, had to have been someone that had no idea what they were doing because it just shows the helmet cam (I assume?) point of view of someone riding an ATV through muddy trails in a forest.

It's not too bad a video and is here, at Alaska ATV, because it gives an idea on what I wanna start stealing my brother's helmet cam for later this summer.

Titles

Yes, there is a change to the blog.

I decided that I needed titles for some of the posts, so I turned them on.

Just a little crash and burn entertainment

I got out onto YouTube looking at ATV videos and found this. It's a pretty good video, and I have to say, I think the ending is great. It's a great editing job and looks painful, but it's great and not at all what I was expecting! So... Let the bodies hit the floor....

Need to pester my brother about my helmet

I need to get on my brother's case about that helmet that he is supposed to be painting for me. I even got him a new airbrush for Christmas but have not yet got the helmet painted. I suppose I could always take it back (the helmet that is) and paint it myself, but I'm not as good at that stuff as he is.

I've been considering going GeoCaching for a long time now, and plan to use my ATV this summer to start it. I'll have to borrow the GPS my brother uses for his paragliding, but that should not be a problem and his GPS is a lot better than anything I could afford to buy myself for quite a while.

If you don't know what geocaching is check this site out http://www.geocaching.com/ or take a look at the page on geocaching at Wikipedia.
