Bears in Alaska

Here is a small example of the sorts of things you need to be aware that you are out with when you are ATVing around Alaska. We took a trip to Seward last weekend and saw a momma bear and her twin cubs on the Kenai River. Was very kewl.

Here's a better look at the momma, unfortunately I didn't get any other pictures of the cubs because they stayed in the trees and bushes most of the time.

Yes that's the same momma bear, she just looks lighter in the top picture because she had moved upriver from my location and the angle of the sun against her hide had changed.

Sultana and Denali - aka: Mt Foraker and Mt McKinley

This is the view I get on a clear day of Sultana and Denali (aka: Mt Foraker and Mt McKinley to you in the lower 48) when I take my ATV up into Big Lake.

There is a point in the trail where the trail lifts up high above the trail and you can get a good view of the mountains from there on a nice clear day.

Now, bear in mind here, they may look a little unimpressive, but I'm also about 200 miles south of them when I took this. That's like standing just inside the border of Washington State on the Oregon side and photographing something on the Canadian border.

Happy belated 4th everyone!

Whew. I can't believe it has been almost back to my birthday since I made it out to this blog. ::shakes head::

I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July. I spent mine at home, listening to the fireworks exploding around the neighborhood and drive the poor dogs to distraction as they either tried to go see what it was making the noise or hide from the loud bangs.

In Alaska you have to wait until the wee hours of the morning to be able to set off the good fireworks, so the good display is always at the State Fair in September rather than on the 4th. September it is dark enough outside to allow the huge aerials to be launched up and look spectacular at a reasonable time of night. In July you sort of have to wait till after midnight to get the same kind of darkness.

Today, like the last few days, is a rainy muggy mess outside. Not sure when the good sunny weather plans to come back, but I'm hoping it's soon. I'm tired of rain storms. At least there is no bad lighting like there was during the last rain storm. Hate lightning.
